Embattled former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn celebrated New Year’s Eve surrounded by his wife and friends in Lebanon, following his dramatic, Hollywood-worthy escape from Japan inside an instrument case.
The alleged embezzler, 65, is shown in a photo seated at the head of a table adorned with glasses of wine and several candles, flanked by his wife and a few unidentified pals.
The snapshot, first released by French TV outlet TF1, is believed to have been taken in the Beirut mansion in which the Lebanon-raised Ghosn has taken refuge following his flight to freedom.
Concerned with his ability to get a fair trial in Japan, and fed up with house arrest and court orders barring him from speaking to his wife, Ghosn orchestrated his cramped escape out of the Asian nation on Sunday.
Amid a holiday party at the tony Tokyo apartment to which he’d been confined, a group of mercenaries posing as musicians packed the 5-foot-6 auto honcho into a musical instrument case, possible a double bass case, and secreted him out of the pad and onto a private jet, jumping his $14 million bail.
He took that plane, then another into Turkey, before continuing on his way to Lebanon.
Turkish authorities detained seven people on Thursday in connection to the escape: four pilots, two airport ground workers and a cargo worker.
Meanwhile, Interpol issued a wanted notice for Ghosn, though, as Lebanese Justice Minister Albert Serhan told The Associated Press, his nation does not have an extradition treaty with Japan.
