UK: “It’s Okay to be White” flyers spark outrage in Scotland

Flyers posted on lampposts and drainpipes throughout Perth, Scotland reading “It’s Okay to be White”, have sparked outrage among Europhobic peoples and politicians alike.

The posting of the seemingly innocuous message around the city has been condemned by the Scottish Deputy Prime Minister, John Swinney of the Scottish National Party, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reports.

Swinney, who’s also a Member of Scottish Parliament for Perthshire North, called the flyers “atrocious” and said that they had “no place in Perth or any other part of our country”.

Swinney also took to social media, writing: “We must stand together to resist this unacceptable material.”

Exactly why the slogan “It’s okay to be white” is so atrocious and unacceptable remains unclear, although according to the BBC, the flyers made some locals feel “unsafe”. Why the posters made them feel unsafe is a question that wasn’t examined in the BBC’s article.

After seeing the flyers one local contacted the group Perth Against Racism and said: “I am certainly worried now for my daughters who are not white but are from Perth,” adding “It’s sickening and disgusting to know that people think like this.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish police said: “Although no complaint has been made to police regarding these posters, they have been brought to our attention and officers are currently looking into the matter.”

In 2017, after the same flyers appeared on the streets of the United States, Fox News host Tucker Carlson defended the message, asking: “What is the correct position? That it is not okay to be white?”
