Poll: Gap between Le Pen and Macron for 2022 presidential race narrowing
French populist Marine Le Pen continues to close the gap in a would-be rematch between her and President Emmanuel Macron in the first and second rounds of the 2022 presidential race, a new poll has revealed.
The poll, conducted by Ifop for the Le Journal du Dimanche, revealed that Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron would each receive between 27 and 28 percent of the vote in the first round of the 2022 presidential election.
The figures show a marked increase in support for Le Pen compared to the first round of the 2017 elections, where she garnered 21.3 percent of the vote, against the 24 percent that Macron captured.
In the case that Valerie Pécresse were to run for the center-right Republicans, Macron grabbed 28 percent of the vote, compared to the 27 percent he would garner if center-right candidates Xavier Bertrand or François Baroin were to run. Marine Le Pen, on the other hand, remained at 28 percent regardless of the candidate the Republicans put up.
Jean-Luc Mélenschon of the democratic socialist party La France insoumise, came in at third with 11 percent, tied with François Baroin, but ahead of Xavier Bertrand (10%) or Valérie Pécresse (7%).
Marine Le Pen also narrowed the gap in a would-be second-round matchup between herself and Macron in 2022.
The poll revealed that if a second round were to take place between Le Pen and Macron, Macron would take 55 percent of the vote (-2 from May), with Le Pen collecting 45 percent of the vote (+2 from May). This, compared to the second round in 2017, where Macron scored 66.1 percent against Le Pen’s 33.9 percent.
The Ifop survey was carried out between the 28th and 30th of October, with a representative sample of 1,503 registered voters. The poll’s margin of error came in between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
