MADISON - GOP leader and congressional candidate Scott Fitzgerald said Thursday the impeachment effort could help President Donald Trump win a second term.
"It’s got the Trump voter jazzed up," said Fitzgerald, the state Senate majority leader. "I mean, I don’t think there’s any two ways of looking at it, they are fired up. They're upset with what's going on. I think the Democrats — and (Speaker) Nancy Pelosi must know this — that there's a point where they can overplay their hand and I think they're very close to it right now."
Fitzgerald, who is running to succeed retiring Republican U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, made the comments at a luncheon sponsored by WisPolitics.com.
"If they try to delegitimize Donald Trump’s election there’s going to be a backlash and I think it’s going to be turnout," Fitzgerald, of Juneau, said. "And it’s probably not going to be necessarily the hardcore Republicans that people should take a look at. It’s those independents."
Trump in 2016 became the first Republican presidential candidate to win Wisconsin since 1988.
Fitzgerald said he believed Trump had a better shot at winning the Badger State in 2020 because there is more support this time for him in suburban Milwaukee, a traditional stronghold for Republicans.
Democrat Tom Palzewicz, who is running for Sensenbrenner's seat, said it's too soon to say what the political ramifications of the impeachment inquiry will be.

Palzewicz supports the impeachment inquiry but said more information needs to become public before he can say whether he thinks the president should be impeached and removed from office.
But members of the House and Senate need to consider the issue without taking into account how it will affect their electoral fortunes, he said in an interview.
"This is about country over party at this point," he said .
Fitzgerald is the only Republican to announce a run for Sensenbrenner's seat, but others are considering it.
