Four boats carrying 39 migrants made it to English shores within a span of just three hours on Sunday after they were intercepted by U.K. authorities, bringing the total number of migrant arrivals this month up to 129.
After being intercepted by the U.K. Border Force somewhere in the English Channel, all of the migrants identified themselves as Iranian nationals, the Daily Mail reports.
The first boat, which was reportedly intercepted by the Border Force at around 4:30 am, contained nine migrants. Shortly after at 6 am, the Border Force intercepted a second boat carrying five people.
One hour later, two additional vessels carrying 11 and 14 migrants, respectively, were intercepted by British authorities.
“Border Force dealt with four incidents on November 17 after being alerted to small boats traveling across the Channel towards the U.K.,” a Home Office spokesperson said in a statement.
“The people from all boats were taken to Dover where they were medically assessed before being interviewed by immigration officials,” the spokesperson added.
As Voice of Europe reported late last month, close to 1,500 migrants have successfully made their way to the UK from across the channel in 2019, a 500 percent increase from 2018.
In September, a record-setting 86 migrants were caught illegally crossing the English Channel in a single day.
In spring, UK authorities revealed the illegal migrants have become so emboldened by the lack of the disciplinary measures taken against them, that many are calling the border force and other security forces to pick them up from their boats.
