UK: University’s student union bans white people from attending ‘anti-racism’ conference

The Student’s Union at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom has banned white students from attending a series of ‘anti-racism’ meetings.

The union claims that the ban on white students comes as a part of its effort to shift from a “non-racist to an actively anti-racist” organization, The Sheffield Tab reports.

Apparently, becoming an anti-racist organization means not having white students attend their meetings.

The union has called on students to share ideas and experiences in two focus group meetings.

“Please note that these sessions are only open to black and minority ethnic (BME) students,” the group’s press release states.

This isn’t the first time that a university-sanctioned event in the UK has openly excluded white people from participating.

Last month, the University of Edinburgh held supposed ‘anti-racism’ conference called ‘Resisting Whiteness 2019’ which banned white people from speaking.

The event’s blurb stated that organizers will ‘not be giving the microphone to white people during the Q&As’.

“If you are a white person with a question, please share it with a member of the committee or our speakers after the panel discussion,” the event’s promotional material reads.

The event also had a ‘safe space’ which was reserved ‘only for people of color’.
