Swedenistan : Sweden Democrats now most popular party among trade union members
The populist Sweden Democrats are now the most popular party among members of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO), an umbrella organization for fourteen trade unions operating in the country.
The Sweden Democrats have now surpassed the Social Democrats as the most popular party among blue-collar workers who are represented by LO, a new survey by Expressen/Sifo has revealed.
The survey found that among LO members, 31 percent supported the Sweden Democrats whereas 30.6 supported the Social Democrats.
Support for the Social Democrats among LO voters has fallen dramatically in the past decade. Since 2010, LO voters supporting Social Democrats has cut in half from sixty to thirty percent.
The survey’s results on some level are shocking since the LO base, for nearly a century, had been central to the Social Democrats electoral success.
However, because Social Democrats have abandoned their LO base by importing hundreds of thousands of welfare-dependent migrants who refuse to integrate, it’s no surprise that LO members would seek representation elsewhere.
“The LO members have always been the Social Democrats’ base, so when they disappear, it is obviously very worrying for the party,” said Toivo Sjörén, the head Sifo.
Even more worrying for the Social Democrats is that female LO voters have also started to defect to the Sweden Democrats.
Lena Rådström Baastad, the party secretary of the Social Democrats, believes that support for her party among LO voters is due to gang violence.
“We are having a tough time with everything from the gang shootings to other serious crimes, and where we are as a party in government may have affected public opinion of the party,” she said.

In the past two months, the Sweden Democrats have been steadily climbing in the polls, and have now caught up with the Social Democrats. According to a Sifo poll, the Sweden democrats enjoy 28.5 percent support among Swedish voters, compared to the 28.4 percent enjoyed by the Social Democrats.
