Germany: AfD politician calls on Berlin and Brussels to freeze all outgoing funds to Turkey

Following news of pro-Turkish forces having executed nine Kurdish civilians over the weekend, prominent German MP and AfD Foreign Policy Spokesman Petr Bystron has urged Berlin and Brussels to freeze all outgoing funds to Turkey.

“The EU pays Turkey €3 billion every year for the so-called Refugee Pact, while Recep Tayyip Erdogan still sends thousands of illegal migrants to the Greek isles and threatens to swamp Europe with even more. In addition, the EU will pay Turkey €9 billion between 2007 and 2020 for an EU accession nobody wants, while Turkey turns away ever more from the Western community and values,” Bystron said.

In addition to mentioning Erdogan’s increasingly belligerent geopolitical behavior, the AfD politician also argued the people of Germany and citizens of the EU shouldn’t be expected to pay for Erdogan’s military build-up.

“The German taxpayer largely has to pay these astronomical sums, so the Turkish tyrant can maintain the largest military in Europe, make territorial claims against Greece, Syria, and Iraq, and now wage a brutal war of aggression against Kurdish civilians in Northern Syria.”

“Germany and the EU must immediately halt all payments to Turkey and instead invest in our own border protection, or we will be guilty of supporting Turkey’s war crimes against the Kurds,” Bystron added.

Last week, following Brussels condemnation of Turkey’s military incursion into northeast Syria, Erdogan, for the second time in just months, threatened to flood Europe with 3.6 million migrants.
In response to Erdogan’s threats, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called on NATO to increase naval patrols in the Aegean Sea to protect against a large scale migrant invasion.

Aside from the decision made by the governments of Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, and Finland to halt arms exports to Turkey, Erdogan has yet to face any further consequences for his belligerent and dangerous behavior.
