Emmy Awards receive lowest ratings of all time

Ratings for the 71st Emmy Awards ceremony hit an all-time low, surpassing last year’s record for the least viewers.

The awards show, which celebrates excellence in the TV industry and was aired on Fox, was up against NBC’s Sunday Night Football. According to Deadline, the awards took in a 5.7/10 in early metered market results. That marks a 23% drop from the 2018 Emmy Awards, which were held on a Monday.

Sunday’s ceremony was host-less for the first time in decades. The gala comes at a time of declining viewership for awards shows across the board, the exception being this year’s host-less Oscars, which saw a rise in viewers.

The show was also down in ratings compared to the last time it was held on a Monday, in the red 30% compared to the 2017 iteration on CBS. It also fell in ratings compared to the last time Fox ran the show in 2015, down 34.5%.

The shows have become increasingly political in recent years, drawing criticism from some conservatives and from President Trump.

The president mocked the Oscars last month to supporters and said that the lowered ratings were “because they started taking us on.”

There were a number of political statements made during Sunday’s gala, with actress Michelle Williams bringing attention to the pay gap between men and women in Hollywood.

“The next time a woman — and especially a woman of color, because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white male counterpart — tells you what she needs in order to do her job, listen to her. Believe her,” she said.
During the acceptance of her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Patricia Arquette advocated for transgender rights.
“They're human beings. Let’s give them jobs and let’s get rid of this bias that we have everywhere,” Arquette told the crowd.
